Classics’ 2012 Bathurst Cars

The Classic Carlectables range of 2012 Bathurst cars has been released, and I’ve bought all three. After hearing horror stories about their 1:18 offerings, it is disappointing to see their 1:43s have got similar, though less severe, issues.

Production figures for these ‘one off’ race versions are:

  • Whincup/Dumbrell – 1500 pieces
  • Lowndes/Luff – 2050 pieces
  • Winterbottom/Richards – 1150 pieces
(L to R) the race winning Whincup/Dumbrell #1 car; Lowndes/Luff #888 in Brock retro livery; Winterbottom/Richards #5 in Moffat '77 retro livery

Classics has been using these same moulds for a few years now. Generally, they are pretty good models with what I would say are fairly accurate castings, however they do have some inaccuracies that the company doesn’t seem too eager to fix, such as exhaust outlets, windscreen wipers (on the Holden) and wheel camber & location to name a few.

The quality of the decoration, unfortunately, has slipped from what it was a year or so back. Luckily, the bricks-and-mortar retailer I buy these from had several in stock, so I could choose the better build of each model. Some of the others I left behind were terrible; one had a front wheel half hanging off, another had badly smudged decoration, and glue stains and heavily chipped decals were pretty common.

The chips in the models I decided to buy are almost all in the black areas, so at least that is easy to fix with a spot of paint.

My retailer said they’d sent back over a dozen of the 1:18s (ironically, these bad versions that are disappearing from the market are likely to become rare and highly collectable in the future. Something for the profiteers out there to think about…).

The 2012 Bathurst 1000 race winning Vodafone entry (top) and two of the special "50th Year of Bathurst" retro livery cars. The packing is the usual job from Classics, loosely aligned with the colour scheme of the car and includes the numbered Certificate of Authenticity - nice touches if you are into that sort of thing (I'm not. I just see it as unnecessary additional expense).

The cars appear to be painted one base colour, then almost entirely wrapped in decorated decal film. There appears to be very little mask painting (maybe only the side window surrounds?) or tampo printing (just the window insert?).

The wheels should be shiny machined alloy, and they are generally not too bad (and certainly a more accurate shape than the Apex version), but one of the wheels on the Vodafone car is almost a dull grey.

These are still decent models – but the quality is not what Classics have delivered in the past, and certainly falls below what a modern day limited edition collectable model should be.

Unfortunately, this batch seems particularly prone to bits of dust in and under the paint and decals, misaligned parts, plus minor scuffs and chipped decoration. I recall reading somewhere that Classics have had to change production factory? Well, management of the QC department need a good kick up the proverbial…

Similarly, the driver's side mirror is not seated in it's recess. You can also see the excess glue on the interior roll bar and smudge on the windscreen. The side window is actually ok - it's just frosted up in this pic!

Poor masking for the black of the doors. Plus a few dirty marks and minor decal tear. Exhausts have pretty much always been wrong on the current crop of models.

Huge decal covers the entire side of the car and the red inside the logo is different to the red body colour. There's a white blotch under the 'e', air under the logo at the side light and a gap and mess between the side skirt and bottom of the door. These were all issues (except for the blotch) on the Lowndes 2012 'season' car I'd already purchased a month or so back.

A number of the decals are simply torn, such as the red bonnet covering (which doesn't cover the rear lip properly either) and the 888 number on the roof. Interior decals are a nice touch.

More torn/chipped decal work. Some extra detail/decoration on the side light would have been nice. The white body colour appears bright white in these photos, however it's actually more a cream colour than stark white. Not sure if this is how the real car was, but the models of Brock toranas I have are 'white' white.

Messed up lower decal on the rear bar, plus chip on the mudguard edge and mess on the side skirt. Exhausts are totally wrong - the team ran a twin outlet system (not triple) that exited further forward and went through the side skirt (not under) and included a shiny metallic protective shroud around the outlet area.
